Ocean pout (eelpout) in Ocean City, Maryland

Ocean pout are cod-like bottom fish with a wide tadpole mouth, often called eelpout though they are not American eel. You are more likely to see them on cold-structure days than on a July surf-casting trip around Ocean City.

Editorial only. The nickname eelpout confuses the cooler line—this page is Zoarces / ocean pout in the regional sense, not a substitute for the American eel rule table. For seasons, min size, and any regional closures, read Maryland DNR and federal references when the trip is outside state waters. Official portals.

Cool-water bottom and structure fishing (general; Mid-Atlantic context)
Scene-appropriate only—eelpout are a cold-bottom conversation more than a sunburn Instagram shot.

Eelpout is not a license to guess “eel”

Long body, small chin barbel, mottled bundle of attitude—a fish that can hook on the same crab, clam, and shrimp baits as a winter tog story, with a completely different DNR line. If you are unsure, ask the mate before the kill shot.

Wreck rail and the winter mind-set

Out of Ocean City planning, pout are easier to talk about in cold months and structure drifts than in peak beach-bucket weeks—still, bycatch on sea-bass and scup jigs happens when the thermocline and cod cousin stories line up. Treat it like any other mixed-bag ID day on dogfish drifts: pliers, respect, and a calmer hand than TikTok speed.
