Whales, dolphins & seals
Marine mammals of Mid-Atlantic waters around Ocean City and Assateague: bottlenose dolphins in warm months, occasional whales offshore, and cold-season seals. This hub covers where to look, when odds improve, and how to watch without crowding wildlife.
Where to look
Start with the beach and Inlet for bottlenose dolphins in warm months—scan east of the breakers and along the inlet mouth with binoculars. Assateague’s ocean shoreline is quieter than the Boardwalk corridor for the same pods. Whales are mostly offshore or distant from shore on migration days; seals show best on cold-season beaches and haul-outs, not July sand.
When odds improve
Dolphins are most reliable late spring through early fall on calmer mornings and late afternoons. Humpbacks and other large whales favor migration and winter–spring windows when seas are clear enough to see blows. Harbor seals peak late fall through early spring—plan winter optics, not a midsummer seal hunt.
Viewing etiquette
Federal law protects marine mammals. Keep boats a respectful distance, never feed or chase wildlife, and do not pursue pods with personal watercraft. Stay 150+ feet from hauled-out seals; leash dogs. Report entangled or distressed animals to stranding responders—do not “rescue” them yourself. For cruise logistics and season questions, use the dolphin and whale FAQ hubs; fishing charter pages are a different product.
3 marine mammals from the Nature Guide mammals set—profiles below deepen species-level where / when / etiquette. Keep viewing separate from fishing species catalogs.
