Will I see wild horses on Assateague?

Wild horses are Assateague’s icon—not pets. Stay at least a bus-length away, never feed them, and secure food in vehicles. Bites and kicks send visitors to urgent care every season.

How does Assateague’s beach differ from Ocean City?

Ocean City is a resort Boardwalk beach with lifeguards (seasonal) and dense amenities. Assateague is a national seashore—wilder, fewer services, entrance fees, and different pet/ORV rules.

Compare same-day surf on Beach Weather before you choose which shoreline fits the group.

Can I drive on Assateague beaches?

Over-sand vehicle (ORV) driving is regulated on Assateague with permits, tire-pressure rules, and seasonal closures for nesting. It is not a free-for-all beach highway.

Unpermitted driving damages dunes and risks fines. Most OC visitors enjoy Assateague on foot without ORV gear.
