Spotted seatrout (speckled trout) in Ocean City, Maryland

Spotted seatrout are a Southeast and Gulf inshore favorite that occasionally headlines Delmarva inlets when grass, clarity, and salinity align. They are not the same fish as weakfish, which some locals call gray trout around Ocean City.

Editorial only. Do not use Carolina speck marketing as Maryland law. Verify seasons, min sizes, and whether a spotted seatrout season is in effect for your area on Maryland DNR. Distinguish from weakfish and from freshwater trout before you name a catch on social. Planning: NWS/NOAA + fishing-weather, official portals.

Inshore and grass-edge water (general; Ocean City, Maryland area)
Atmospheric inshore day—spotted seatrout love grass edges; not every local flat holds them every season.

ID: spotted seatrout

Spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) carries a speckle pattern on a silvery-olive back, prominent canine teeth, and a more elongate look than a typical pan croaker. It is a different species from weakfish (Cynoscion regalis)—if your ID is a guess, release and find a diagram you trust.

Where anglers look in-range

Grassbed edges, winding channels, and clean flood tides are the habitat chapter when “specks” are a reasonable hope: places where small bait can slide out of a marsh and meet current. From Ocean City, the conversation often mixes with red drum and striped bass timing—separate the species at the stringer, not the cooler photo.

Lures, scent, and live bait

  • Soft plastics and paddletails fished in the thump zone—tide matters more than a bright chart color when the bite is a soft thud.
  • Topwater on calm dawn windows when the sound carry matters more than a long cast; watch for bluefish in the same class—rerig leaders accordingly.
  • Live shrimp and small baitfish (where season and local rules allow) for picky fish; match hook to mouth and avoid gut-hooking on quick-release fish.

Cold stress

Specks can be temperature-sensitive. In warm, oxygen-poor backwater, plan quick photos and a healthy release—your personal best is not a license to exhaust a slot fish on the stringer in July heat.
