Beach bonfires
Beach bonfires in Ocean City require a permit. They are not a show-up-with-firewood tradition. Use the official Town bonfire page for rules and availability.
Visitors often assume Mid-Atlantic beach towns allow casual sand fires. In Ocean City, open flames on the beach are regulated. Plan through the Town-linked permit path at ocbonfires.com, or choose a no-fire evening plan instead.
Easy backups
- Boardwalk dessert walk and Inlet sunset photos.
- Condo grilling only where your rental explicitly allows it.
- Indoor rainy-day or movie night when wind or permits do not cooperate.

Beach bonfire FAQs
- Can I just dig a fire pit on the sand?
- No. Ocean City does not treat casual open fires like some other beaches. Assume you need the official permitting process—or skip the fire and use lodging fireplaces / designated grilling areas where posted.
- Where do I apply?
- The Town’s How Do I menu points beach bonfire requests to ocbonfires.com. Start there for current availability, rules, and fees. This site does not issue permits.
- What if I only want s’mores with kids?
- Many families use condo grills, rooftop amenities (where allowed), or dessert on the Boardwalk instead of fighting permit windows. Hotel and rental rules still apply—ask your host before any open flame.
- Do fireworks or tents need different approval?
- Yes. Fireworks, large tents, and occupancy questions often involve the Fire Marshal and other permits—not the bonfire form. Confirm separately before a wedding or party setup.
