Fish Tales review: a family waterfront dinner with a real plan
Sarah Kim reviews Fish Tales at Bahia Marina for Beach Blog, covering fish tacos, deck dining, kid-friendly baskets, marina parking, waits, and practical family timing.
Fish Tales is the kind of Ocean City restaurant families picture when they say they want a waterfront dinner: seafood, fish tacos, cold drinks for the grown-ups, and a deck at Bahia Marina where the bay does a lot of the decorating. It is at 2107 Herring Way, not on Coastal Highway, and that detail matters when everyone is hungry and somebody has already announced that the GPS is wrong.
I am Sarah Kim. My standard for a restaurant like this is not whether it can manufacture a perfect vacation postcard. It is whether a family can arrive, park, eat, and leave without turning dinner into an endurance sport. Fish Tales can absolutely fit the plan, especially after marina activities, but peak-season timing is the whole game.

The afternoon fish Tales got real
Fish Tales is a bayside deck-and-bar restaurant, not a quiet dining room where every adult can hear every sentence. Its public profile centers seafood plates, fish tacos, drinks, outdoor seating, and the high-volume pace of a well-known summer waterfront stop. Families and groups are part of the point.
That energy can be fun after a boat outing or a beach day. Kids have something to look at besides the bread basket, adults have bay views, and the menu has more than one lane. It can also be loud, busy, sunny, breezy, and slower at the exact moment every other vacation family is trying to eat. All of those statements can be true at once.
Why fish Tales earns a spot on the week
The sensible shared starting point is the restaurant’s seafood-and-taco identity. Fish tacos and seafood platters are the recurring signature choices in the public information, and kid-friendly baskets are specifically part of the family appeal. That gives a table of four or six a decent chance of avoiding the “nothing here looks good” stalemate.
For kids, order familiar food before the adults get philosophical about seafood. A good kids meal is a public service, and a basket that arrives quickly can buy the table time. For adults, fish tacos make sense when you want something lighter than a large platter; the platter lane is better when the group came to make dinner the event.
The crushes and cold drinks are part of the bar energy. Enjoy them as an adult choice, not as a reason to accidentally make a 7:30 family dinner longer than it needs to be.
The working rhythm around fish Tales
Parking: Fish Tales runs on Bahia Marina timing. Marina parking dynamics are a recurring note, and holiday weekends are not when to assume a quick space will appear. Arrive early or build in a little walking-and-regrouping time.
Reservations and big tables: Call 410-289-0990 for large groups or peak nights. If you are trying to land after fireworks, confirm hours directly before promising that plan to the children. Peak-season hours can run late, but “can” is not a reservation.
Weather: Deck dining is central here. Bring sunscreen for earlier meals, a layer for bay breeze, and a backup attitude if rain changes the plan. Outdoor seating is lovely until it is not.
Waits: The recurring criticism is tourist-volume pacing. That is code for: do not arrive at the most popular dinner hour with tired children and no margin.
What Ocean City changes about fish Tales
My family-style approach would be an early dinner after a marina activity, before the holiday crowd decides sunset is dinner o’clock. Put the restaurant’s address in the navigation app before leaving the beach. Call ahead for a large group. Bring a small snack if your kids’ hunger has a timer. This is not defeat; this is competent parenting.
The deck is a feature, so ask about outdoor seating when you call if that matters. But do not make a specific table your emotional centerpiece. Bay wind, weather, capacity, and the rest of the island also get a vote.
Easy misses with fish Tales
At its best, Fish Tales offers the thing a family vacation dinner should offer: a recognizable Ocean City setting, seafood and casual options in the same place, and a mood that feels like you left your regular Tuesday behind. The value improves when the group actually wants that waterfront experience and orders across the menu with a plan.
It is less compelling if your goal is a fast, quiet, bargain dinner. Views, marina location, and peak summer demand all come with a cost, whether that cost is the tab, the wait, or both. That does not make the place a tourist trap. It means the experience is part of what you are buying.
A smaller fish Tales habit wins
Fish Tales is a good family waterfront choice when you schedule it like a waterfront choice. Go for the bay backdrop, fish tacos or seafood, and a menu that gives kids a lane. Go early, call for bigger groups, and accept that a popular deck in July will have opinions about your timeline.
The bathrooms, booths, and actual service matter more than a postcard. But a bay view can still make a regular family dinner feel like vacation.
