Answer
Ocean beaches face the Atlantic; bay beaches and bulkheads face Isle of Wight / Assawoman Bay. Ocean water is cooler, saltier, and more rip-prone. Bay water can feel warmer and calmer but still has boat traffic, shallow drop-offs, and different wildlife.
Do not assume a calm bay morning means safe ocean swimming the same hour. Kids who toddle in bay shallows still need life jackets on boats and docks.
Use sea temperature and inshore weather when choosing which shoreline fits your group.
