Ocean City Rip Currents · Ocean City, Maryland

How can I spot a rip current from the beach?

Answer

Look for darker, calmer gaps between breaking waves, foam or debris moving steadily offshore, or water that looks choppy only in one lane. Channels often sit near groins, piers, and Inlet structures—but they also form on open beach. When unsure, ask the lifeguard stand nearest your towel before anyone enters past the knees.
