Visitors often say “undertow,” but lifeguards and NOAA describe rip currents as localized seaward flows—not a constant downward suction across the whole beach. Shorebreak can knock you down in the wash; rips pull you along the surface seaward. Teach kids the float-and-go-sideways script rather than fearing a mythical vacuum.
