Weather & Seasons · Ocean City, Maryland

Why does it feel cooler by the ocean in the afternoon?

Answer

Ocean City often feels cooler by the ocean in the afternoon because a sea breeze develops on warm days: cooler marine air moves inland and takes the edge off hot Boardwalk and beach blocks.

Bayside and mainland pockets—including parts of West Ocean City—can stay hotter and more humid at the same hour. The breeze can also add wind that flips umbrellas or chops the bay even when the sand feels pleasant.

Read wind, air temperature, and Beach Weather together. Still plan shade and water—a cool breeze does not equal low UV.
