Overview
Fenwick Island State Park is Delaware’s southernmost ocean state-park beach—roughly three miles of barrier shoreline between the Atlantic Ocean and Little Assawoman Bay along Route 1 / Coastal Highway, just north of the Town of Fenwick Island. Visit Southern Delaware and Delaware State Parks frame it as a day-use park with guarded summer swimming, a bathhouse and snack bar, surfing and surf fishing on designated ocean beaches, and watercraft rentals on the bay.
From Ocean City you stay on Coastal Highway (MD 528 → DE Route 1). The park is a quieter alternative to Boardwalk crowding, but it is not Town of Fenwick Island municipal sand and it is not Ocean City Beach Patrol jurisdiction—entrance fees, pet seasons, and lifeguard schedules follow Delaware State Parks.
The property began as the southern portion of Delaware Seashore State Park (opened 1967). Private land and Bethany Beach separated it from northern units, so Fenwick Island became its own state park in 1981. A late-1800s U.S. Life-Saving Service station once stood here (lost in the 1962 storm); a World War II–era fire-control tower still marks the coast’s wartime role.
There is no campground, cabin complex, or full marina inside Fenwick Island State Park. For state-park camping and marina services, look farther north to Delaware Seashore State Park; restaurants and lodging sit in nearby Fenwick, Bethany, and Ocean City.

Choose the right part of the park
Fenwick Island State Park is a long barrier-island property, not one compact lot. Pick your destination before you leave Ocean City so you enter the correct access.
- Main ocean beach — guarded summer swimming, bathhouse, showers, changing rooms, seasonal snack concession, chair/umbrella rentals, satellite park office, mobility mats and beach wheelchairs.
- Surf-fishing beaches — York, Middle, and South dune crossings reach multi-use ocean beaches for walk-on anglers and permitted drive-on vehicles that are actively fishing.
- Assawoman Recreation Area (bay side) — Little Assawoman Bay launches for kayaks, paddleboards, wind sports, and small sailboats; quieter sunsets than the ocean swim beach.
- Town of Fenwick Island beaches — separate municipal parking and rules; do not assume a state-park pass covers town lots.
Amenities & seasonal services
Visit Southern Delaware and Delmarva Trails both highlight a developed day-use ocean beach: bathhouse with showers, umbrella/food concessions in peak season, and ADA-friendly beach access equipment when available. Peak summer lots fill early—local guides often recommend arriving before 10 a.m. on sunny Saturdays.
- Seasonal: lifeguards, concessions, chair/umbrella rentals, paddlesport rentals, satellite bathhouse office.
- Accessibility: boardwalk/dune crossing, Mobi-Mat style beach mats, and beach wheelchairs—call (302) 227-2800 to confirm same-day setup.
- Not in park: camping, cottages, or a full public boat-ramp marina (use Delaware Seashore or inland-bay ramps when you need those).
- Busy-day tip: use the park entrance, not a town beach street, so you do not mix parking systems.
Ocean swimming, surfing & the bay
The ocean beach slopes gradually into the Atlantic and is a family-friendly state-park swim when guards are on duty. Surfing and bodyboarding stay in posted zones. Outside the published lifeguard season and area, swimming is at your own risk—rip currents still apply.
Little Assawoman Bay is the sheltered contrast: warmer shallows, marsh edges, and wind-sport space. Bring life jackets, watch thunderstorms, and confirm whether your outing uses a commercial rental or a personal launch allowed at that access.
Pets, dunes & fees (quick rules)
Pets: leash ≤ 6 feet in allowed areas. From May 1–September 30, pets are prohibited in designated swimming/sunbathing areas; BringFido and park summaries note leashed dogs may still use other designated areas and accompany permitted surf-fishing vehicles. Stay off dunes and nesting closures. Service animals follow applicable law.
Fees: ocean-park daily vehicle rates and annual passes are published on Delaware State Parks’ passes page. Fenwick State Line Beach is called out separately in fee exceptions—read the fine print if that unit is in play. An annual entrance pass never replaces a surf-fishing vehicle permit.
Highlights
- Quieter multi-mile beach day than the Ocean City Boardwalk—still a full beach kit (water, shade, sunscreen).
- Seasonal lifeguards on the designated ocean swim beach Memorial Day through Labor Day.
- Bathhouse, showers, and peak-season concessions make family beach days easier than undeveloped barrier beaches.
- Bay paddling and ocean surfing/fishing can share one Fenwick corridor if you leave traffic buffer.
- Surf fishing uses three dune crossings (York, Middle, South) with separate vehicle-permit rules.
FAQ
Is Fenwick Island State Park the same as Town of Fenwick Island beaches?
No. The state park sits along Route 1 north of town and uses Delaware State Parks fees and rules. Municipal street parking and town beach access are separate.
Can I camp here?
No. Fenwick Island State Park is day-use only. Look to Delaware Seashore State Park farther north for tent/RV sites and cottages, or keep lodging in Ocean City / Fenwick town.
Can I drive on the beach?
Only at designated surf-fishing crossings with a valid Delaware State Parks surf-fishing vehicle permit, required recovery gear, an eligible vehicle, and active fishing—not for sightseeing. Peak-season reservations may also apply.
Where should families go for a classic beach day?
The main developed ocean beach—guarded swim area near the bathhouse, showers, accessible mats/wheelchairs, and seasonal concessions.
Is the park open in winter?
Yes, 8 a.m. to sunset daily. Lifeguards, concessions, rentals, and the satellite office are seasonal, so winter visits are quieter and more self-sufficient.
