Gulf flounder in Ocean City, Maryland

Gulf flounder are southern flatfish that occasionally ride warm water north to Ocean City waters. Look for three ocellated spots on the eyed side and check Maryland DNR rules, because this fish does not automatically count as summer fluke.

Three-ring circus vs fluke paint

Gulf flounder usually show three large ocellated spots on the brown side; summer flounder color varies but the “always three neat Gulf rings” story is the first sort at the rail. Cross-check fourspot if the count reads four small pepper dots instead.

Same drifts, wrong brag sometimes

They eat like other Paralichthys—bottom contact, Gulp, live minnows—so the mistake is usually ID, not tackle. When in doubt, release and re-measure with the official illustration.
