Lizardfish in Ocean City, Maryland

Lizardfish are elongated, toothy predators that will eat the same bait your fluke rig is trying to protect around Ocean City. This page covers when they show on bay and nearshore structure and how to handle this common bycatch.

Editorial only. Several Synodus species occur regionally; retention, size, and season lines belong to Maryland DNR and the federal references your trip already uses if you are outside state waters. If you are fishing for fun on a mixed-bag day, quick release with minimal handling protects the next angler’s time on the rail. Official portals.

Inshore and near-bottom fishing (general; Ocean City, Maryland area)
Scene only—lizardfish show as pecky oddballs on the same drifts that mix fluke and sea robin.

Where you meet them

Think sandy cuts, channel edges, and rips where small finfish stack—lizardfish sit head-into-current and hammer anything that looks like a wounded spearing. They are not a dedicated target for most Ocean City itineraries, but they steal light-bait presentations and complicate “is that a hit?” coaching with kids.

Handling and release

  • Long jaws, sharp teeth: pliers, lip control with respect, and no “thumb in the gill raker” bravado.
  • Compare with Atlantic needlefish for silver, gar-like surf fish—different family, same “weird catch” energy.
