Witch flounder (grey sole) in Ocean City, Maryland
Witch flounder are smooth, left-eyed flatfish sometimes called true sole in the flounder mix around Ocean City. The word sole matters for rules and fillet work on the same rail where you are hoping for doormat fluke, so ID carefully.

Sole in the name, not in the brag
Anglers on fluke days sometimes lift a grey sole feel and mis-call the slot. If the body reads slender, smooth, and true-sole, you are in a different DNR line than “big flattie for the cookout.”
Use the flatfish triage list
- Windowpane and fourspot for the other common “not fluke” head-fakes.
- Winter flounder (blackback) for a second left-eyed cold-water habit on some calendars.
