- Fast, direct flight; often seen in small groups on thistle, knapweed, and garden zinnias.
Biology notes
- Wide-ranging species that breeds on thistles, mallows, and many weeds; coastal numbers spike in irruption years.
- Cannot survive northern winters as adults; repopulated by migrants each spring.
Where to see them around Ocean City
- Assateague dunes and beach wrack lines where seaside plants bloom.
- Vacant lots and garden beds on the Ocean City mainland.
- Salt-marsh edges with flowering asters and marsh fleabane in fall.
When to look
- Spring through fall; occasional big flights in late summer during drought years.
Viewing tips & etiquette
- Check weedy flowers in sunny, sheltered spots—painted ladies are less tied to forest than swallowtails.
