Over Sand Vehicles (OSV)

Miles of designated beach driving for permitted 4WD and AWD vehicles. Permits, required gear, and one-off/one-on limits protect both visitors and nesting birds.

Overview

The OSV zone offers miles of beach managed for over-sand driving and other beach uses. Permits are purchased on recreation.gov and picked up by the registered vehicle owner within 10 days at the Maryland North Beach Ranger Station or Virginia Bateman Center.

Vehicles must be 4WD or AWD within size limits; ATVs/UTVs are prohibited. Required equipment includes a non-plastic shovel, jack and support, low-pressure tire gauge, and adequate tow strap/rope/cable/chain.

Maryland density limits and automated gates commonly create waits on busy summer weekends. Nesting habitat for piping plover and other birds can close sections of the zone from roughly mid-March through late summer.

Highlights

  • Lower tire pressure (often 15–20 psi) before soft sand; carry boards for traction.
  • Stay east of black-and-white posts; dunes and vegetated areas are closed.
  • Speed limits are low near people, wildlife, and horseback riders—NPS specifies reduced speeds within 100 feet.
  • NPS staff can help with sand clearing and advice but will not winch your vehicle out.
