Swimming & surfing

Swimming is allowed on Assateague beaches, but conditions can change quickly. Lifeguard coverage, where present, does not remove the need for surf awareness.

Summary for Ocean City visitors based on National Park Service Assateague guidance. Fees, hours, closures, and permit prices change—confirm on nps.gov/asis before you go.

Overview

Swimming is allowed on Assateague Island National Seashore beaches. Swimming is at your own risk. Strong surf and currents may exist even on calm-looking days—especially if you are used to guarded Ocean City beaches.

Lifeguard coverage changes. NPS beach and surf safety guidance notes the Maryland district may have no lifeguards on duty at times, while Virginia district lifeguards (when staffed) often cover limited days and hours—confirm current staffing before you go.

Learn longshore and seaward (rip) currents. If caught in a rip, swim parallel to shore until free of the current, then swim in—do not exhaust yourself fighting straight back against it.

Highlights

  • Always swim with a buddy; children only with adult supervision.
  • Leave during thunder; do not shelter under umbrellas or outdoor showers. Seek a vehicle or enclosed building.
  • Check rip-current advisories at visitor centers or NOAA beach forecasts.
  • Body boards and noodles can drift you farther than you expect; hard objects (boards, kayaks) can injure others in the shore break.
  • Escape a breaking wave by ducking under; avoid diving into unknown depth—troughs between sandbars can be over your head.
