Philly-area dad who keeps a condo week every summer—rides, beach pacing, and snack diplomacy with three kids.
Complete profile
I’m Mike Harper. I live in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, work in operations, and spend most of the year herding three kids through homework, sports, and whatever snack crisis is currently unfolding. Ocean City is where we hit reset.
We’re not full-time locals. We’re the classic Mid-Atlantic pattern: second-home energy without always owning the place—sometimes a condo we book the same week every year, sometimes a rental that looks exactly like the listing photos until you meet the elevator. Pennsylvania plates in July are basically a love language here.
Why Ocean City
I like Ocean City because it still feels like a family machine that works. Beach in the morning. Boardwalk when you’re brave. Fries that forgive bad parenting decisions. You don’t need a passport or a five-star itinerary. You need sunscreen, a cooler, and a plan that survives a meltdown at 4 p.m.
What I love: the sand is free entertainment. The island is walkable enough that kids feel independent without disappearing into another zip code. And when a ride night goes right, you get that rare parent high—everyone tired for the correct reasons.
What I don’t love: pretending we can do beach + pier + arcade + “just one more” dessert as a single continuous march. Coastal Highway on a Saturday. The way “we’re almost there” means twenty more minutes. I’m honest about that in my posts because pretending otherwise helps nobody.
Family, for real
I’m a single dad. Three kids, different ages, different definitions of “fun.” One wants thrills. One wants tokens. One wants to leave. My Beach Blog voice is basically the diplomacy I practice all week, written down so other parents can steal it.
You’ll see stories in my articles—the night the landmark plan saved us, the token-economy collapse, the dinner-too-late disaster. Those aren’t content tricks. They’re tuition I already paid. The King of Prussia to OC drive is long enough that I treat every hour on the island like it cost something. Because it did.
What I write here
- How to plan an Ocean City ride night without wrecking the beach week - one-pier pacing, dinner timing, and the kid-energy math.
- Rainy day dad pacing: how to survive Ocean City without the arcade spiral - token budgets, indoor pivots, and protecting everybody’s patience.
They are the same family-trip problem in different weather: spend the energy and money on purpose, then stop before the fun turns into a negotiation.
How I write
I answer the question first, then tell the story, then give you a checklist. Humor is allowed. Safety and rules are not jokes. When something belongs on a hub page—amusements, family fun, rainy days, Things to do—I point you there instead of rewriting the directory.
If you’re driving down from Philly, Jersey, or Delaware with a back seat full of opinions: you’re my people. Let’s keep the beach week bigger than the ticket booth.
