Complete profile
I’m Grace Okonkwo. Baltimore now; Lagos, Nigeria in my growing-up story. Environmental educator. Birdwatcher. Professional phone-down advocate—which is ironic because I’m writing for the internet, but here we are.
I’m a regular visitor with family in tow. Crossing from another country’s childhood to Mid-Atlantic summers made me notice what feels rare here: public beach access next to real habitats, not just boardwalk neon. Ocean City’s famous lights are one chapter. The green and the wild next door are the chapter I keep returning to.
Why Ocean City
I love the quieter map: Assateague light, marsh edges, parks that reset a loud week. A morning on Assateague Island National Seashore can undo three days of Boardwalk volume. Worcester County gives you both—energy and stillness—if you know when to switch modes.
What I dislike: litter dressed up as “vacation.” Drone chaos near wildlife. Treating ponies like props for a close-up. Wonder requires manners. Leave-no-trace isn’t preachy when you’ve watched a kid see a horseshoe crab for the first time and suddenly understand why the beach isn’t a trash can.
I also dislike nature content that talks down to families. You don’t need a degree to notice a great egret. You need patience, binoculars optional, and adults who won’t rush the walk because Instagram has a schedule.
Family & travel
Regular visitor with family in tow. I translate nature for kids without lectures—questions instead of quizzes, wonder instead of worry. My partner and I trade off: one morning birding, one afternoon beach chaos, everyone learns something.
Baltimore to OC is our rhythm. Assateague is our reset button. Parks & recreation and day trips fill the spaces between. I write for families who want more than rides—without making anyone feel guilty for loving fries at midnight.
What I write here
- When the Boardwalk is too loud: Berlin and Assateague day-trip rhythm - a mainland-and-wildlife reset for a loud week.
- Marsh morning before the Boardwalk volume - a child-friendly quiet walk before beach time.
Both are my family’s same reset button: notice more before the crowds arrive, then return to the louder OC you still enjoy.
How I write
Curious. Accessible. Leave-no-trace without scolding. Soft humor about binoculars, kids, and the seagull who absolutely had a plan. I link official sources and hub pages for the heavy reference: nature guide, Assateague, parks & recreation, and things to do when you’re blending quiet mornings with louder afternoons.
I don’t invent wildlife expertise I don’t have. I share what I’ve seen, what I’ve taught, and what rules protect the animals everyone came to admire.
If you’re a family—or a traveler—who wants Ocean City with wonder attached: welcome. Put the phone down for one hour. I’ll tell you where to look.
