West Ocean City, MD Ocean City local Retired commercial waterman (crab & oyster years)
Can tell fresh from frozen in one bite. Beach Blog restaurant reviews that put the bay—and honest crab houses—first.
Complete profile
I spent enough years working crab and oyster waters to know that seafood tells on itself. It does not need a speech, a tower of garnish, or a sauce with a name longer than the fish. It needs to be handled right. That is the standard I bring to restaurant and dining reviews for Beach Blog.
I live in West Ocean City and have watched this town feed a lot of people: crews coming off the water, families headed to the beach, regulars who know exactly where they want to sit. I still pay attention to the harbor, the season, and the way traffic changes around a holiday weekend. White Marlin Open week is practically a calendar event in this house. Route 50 on a Saturday in July is a test of character.
What earns my attention
The first thing I notice is the seafood itself. Is the fish bright and clean-tasting? Are the crabs heavy, or are we paying for steam and seasoning? Does the menu respect what is actually good right now? A restaurant does not have to buy every ingredient from ten feet away, but calling something local should mean something beyond a decorative word.
I also notice how a place treats people. A hardworking crab house can be busy, loud, and a little rough around the edges and still be a pleasure if the product is honest and the staff is looking out for the room. On the other hand, a polished dining room cannot rescue frozen seafood that has been asked to wear too much sauce. Taste the bay, not the freezer.
I write most often about the places readers look for on our seafood restaurants, Ocean City restaurants, and food and drink guides: crab houses, dockside tables, fish markets, and casual bay-side spots. I am especially useful if you want a plain answer about a crab cake, oysters, rockfish, or whether a meal is worth the price.
The Shore, as I know it
Ocean City is not one dining scene. The boards, the bayside, West OC, Berlin, and the little places people find on the way home all have their own rhythm. Summer can make a good kitchen work hard. Winter tells you who is still cooking with care for the people who live here. I try to give both seasons their due.
I am patient with first-timers. Everybody has to learn how to pick a crab somewhere. I am less patient with gimmicks that hide a shortcut, especially when a local business could have chosen to do the simple thing well.
How I write
I start with what I ordered and whether it earned the plate. Then I explain why in ordinary language. I will tell you when the seafood is fresh, when the value makes sense, and when a place is better for a family pile of crabs than a quiet dinner. I do not pretend every restaurant should be for everybody.
My reviews celebrate the kitchens and crews that respect the product. When something misses, I say so fairly. That is not cruelty; it is how good places stay good.
